Pool service pricing isn't standardized, and two companies quoting the same backyard can land on very different monthly numbers. Usually the difference comes down to a handful of factors — and to what each quote actually includes — rather than one company simply being more expensive.
What usually drives the price
- Pool size, and whether there's an attached spa or water feature
- Visit frequency — weekly, every other week, or seasonal
- Whether chemicals are included in the monthly rate or billed as used
- How much debris the pool collects from trees and landscaping, and whether it's screened in
- Equipment that needs regular attention, such as a saltwater system or automation
- Access — a locked side gate, a long walk from the street, or stairs
- Your local market, and how long the swim season runs where you live
Chemicals included vs. chemicals extra
This is the most common source of confusing quotes. A chemicals-included rate is more predictable month to month. A lower base rate with chemicals billed separately can end up costing more or less, depending on your pool and the season. Ask each company which model they use, and if chemicals are extra, how they're priced.
Routine service vs. repairs
A monthly rate normally covers the routine visit. Repairs, parts, filter replacements, and green-pool recoveries are usually quoted separately. Ask how repair work gets approved — you want a written quote before work starts, not an unexpected line on your invoice.
A reasonable way to compare quotes
Pricing varies a lot by market, so rather than judging a quote against a number you saw online, ask two or three companies for itemized quotes on the same scope: same frequency, same chemical arrangement, same add-ons. That's the comparison that actually tells you something. A bare-bones quote from one company next to an all-inclusive quote from another doesn't.
Questions worth asking about any quote
- What exactly is included at this price, and what would cost extra?
- Is there a contract term, a start-up fee, or a minimum number of months?
- When and how do prices change — for example, at the start of a new season?
- Is there a charge for an extra visit if the water goes off between stops?
